About the Basset Bleu de Gascogne

FranceHound Group10 - 14 years
History

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne is one of the oldest scent hound breeds to survive into the modern era, with roots tracing back to the 14th century in the Gascony region of southwestern France. The breed descends from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne, a large hunting hound believed to have been developed by Hubert de Montbron and prized by French nobility for hunting large game across difficult terrain. Over centuries, selective breeding produced a shorter-legged variant better suited to hunting smaller game on foot β€” a dog hunters could follow without horses. By the 19th century, the breed had declined sharply, nearly disappearing entirely as hunting traditions changed across France.

Development

Credit for rescuing the Basset Bleu de Gascogne from extinction belongs largely to Alain Bourbon, a French breed enthusiast who worked through the mid-20th century to reconstruct the population using careful selection from remaining French hound lines. The breed was officially recognized by the FΓ©dΓ©ration Cynologique Internationale under FCI Standard No. 35, placing it in Group 6 (Scent Hounds). In the United Kingdom, The Kennel Club recognizes the breed in the Hound Group, though it remains classified in the Import Register given its rarity there. The United Kennel Club in the United States formally recognizes the breed within its Scenthound Group. The American Kennel Club, however, does not currently recognize the Basset Bleu de Gascogne β€” it is not listed in the AKC's Foundation Stock Service, making it genuinely obscure in North America compared to its cousin the Basset Hound.

Recognition

What distinguishes the Basset Bleu from other Basset breeds β€” and France has six distinct Basset varieties β€” is the coat. The signature blue ticking, created by a dense mottling of black on white, produces a slate-gray visual effect that gives the breed its name. This is not the same coat pattern seen on the Basset Hound or the Basset ArtΓ©sien Normand. The Basset Bleu is also notably more athletic and higher-energy than the Basset Hound, reflecting its preservation as an active working hound rather than a companion breed. Its legs, while short, carry a leaner, more muscular frame than the heavier-boned Basset Hound.

Today

The breed remains rare outside France to this day. In the United States and United Kingdom combined, only a handful of dedicated breeders operate, and litter availability in any given year is extremely limited. For anyone seriously interested in this breed, connecting with French breed clubs such as the Club du Bleu de Gascogne is often the most reliable starting point for locating reputable breeders internationally.
