Methodology
All costs are calculated from the ground up per breed using public data from industry sources. We do not use averages from other websites or survey respondents. Each cost component below is calculated independently then summed.
Food costs
Purina Pro Plan feeding guides (cups/day by weight) × 0.25 lb/cup density × $1.90/lb (Chewy Apr 2026, 30–50 lb bags) + 30% for treats and wet food toppers.
Grooming costs
PetSmart/Petco 2026 published session rates. Coat type determined by breed name pattern matching: haircut breeds (Poodle, Doodle, Bichon, Schnauzer, etc.) = 8 sessions/yr; long-coat breeds = 5 sessions/yr; short-coat = 3 sessions/yr.
Veterinary costs
AVMA 2024 wellness survey. Base: $280/yr (2 wellness visits). Dental: $300–$600/yr pro-rated by breed predisposition. Health conditions surcharge added for breeds with documented hereditary issues.
Insurance costs
ValuePenguin February 2026 national average: $62/mo anchor. Size-tiered: small ($45/mo), medium ($62/mo), large ($78/mo), giant ($95/mo). Breed-specific predisposition multiplier applied where documented.
Other costs
Fixed $300/yr for supplies, toys, accessories, and incidentals. First-year includes one-time setup costs: spay/neuter ($300), microchip ($45), initial supplies ($250), training class ($150).
Limitations
Costs reflect the moderate care tier in the continental United States and are calculated as of April 2026. Actual costs vary by location (urban vs rural), individual dog health, owner choices, and market conditions. Insurance costs assume a healthy adult dog with no pre-existing conditions. We update this dataset annually when source data changes materially.
